"Time waits for no one."


I recently watched an anime entitled, 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.' It's about a girl named Makoto who can hop from one day or one hour to another using a device she accidentally obtained from one of her guy friends named Chiaki (the ruddy orange-haired dude who looks like Ichigo in Bleach). This guy friend, she later learns, is from the future, himself. Makoto doesn't get old. She can change the activities she has made during that day. She can even change her choices... and correct her mistakes at that! However, somebody always has to make the mistake she is supposed to make. For example, on this particular day, she is supposed to die because her bike's breaks are broken when she is pedaling downhill and she is supposed to crash against an incoming train. But because she 'time leaps,' she manages to go back in time, and she's still alive. However, in her place, her other guy friend named Kousuke (the handsome and intelligent dude who is serious and is bent on becoming a doctor) and this younger girl that Makoto hooks him up with, are supposed to die.





Anyway, Makoto even manages to escape the Chiaki's confession. The poor guy actually likes her, but she doesn't notice until the guy says so. She alters it many many times until the guy falls for another girl. Makoto realizes that she has some feelings for Chiaki just when he is gone. She dares not alter that again.

But later on, when she finds out that Chiaki knows of her "time leaping," they talk for a while. The guy tells her that he has gone back in time just to see this one painting and that he eventually has to go back to his own era. Somehow, he has prolonged his stay. He tells her, "I guess I liked being with you too much." Then, Makoto pouts and says, "That's not the way you said it last time." Then the guy pesters her to tell him how he has said it. Some naughty kids tease them and call them a couple.

He bids her good-bye. Then a bicycle with a couple on it passes her by. She wails. But he goes back to her, embraces her, and tells her, "I'll be waiting for you in the future."

All in all, I think it's a stupid movie. The girl has control of time, albeit limited, but even if she evades her mistakes, she puts others in jeopardy. In essence, she still makes mistakes. The movie really says, we can't really escape what is going to happen. Can't we?...

It would really be wonderful to know what is going to happen. It would be wonderful to know where we went wrong... or where we would go wrong. So that we could escape that. But then, we don't have the eyes to see everything that is going to happen. We could only take a peek and not really see the big picture.

The girl protagonist asks one of her girl friends, "What do you think is going to happen in the future?" The girl friend tells her, "I don't know... it never ends."

It's a stupid movie. But I liked it. Hehe. ^_^+
